“There is no better investment we can make than providing our children with a strong foundation of learning from an early age.”
- Former Boston Mayor Martin J. Walsh
What is the UPK Program?
Universal Pre-K (UPK) Boston programming is provided in the Boston Public Schools along with numerous community-based organizations. By offering pre-K through a citywide, mixed-delivery system, we can guarantee every 4-year-old in Boston a high-quality pre-K experience in a setting that works for the child and their family.
Baseline features of a UPK program ensure:
-
We offer three full 4-year-old classrooms
-
Equitable access to a free school day (6.5 hours per day / 180 days per year)
-
Maximum teacher to child ratios (2:22 in BPS, 2:20 in all other programs)
-
Environments that are safe and age-appropriate to promote learning
